JPEGMAFIA Produced the Whole Album, Then Booked 23 Rooms

JPEGMAFIA Produced the Whole Album, Then Booked 23 Rooms

The beat on “babygirl” runs bouncy and uptempo for most of its length, then hands the last stretch to metallic guitar. That flip is the clearest advert Experimental Rap has, and it is the record JPEGMAFIA takes into 23 North American rooms starting on 22 September.

The credit list is the other advert. The album was written, mixed and produced entirely by him, with no co-production line to share, which is a harder thing to sustain across a full-length than most releases admit.

The Sample Under the Single

“babygirl” is built on a looped vocal sample from Saul Williams’ 2007 track “tr(n)igger”, per Consequence’s report on the announcement. Choosing a Saul Williams vocal is a statement of lineage rather than a flex: it points at spoken word and at the noisier end of underground rap, both of which sit under the record’s stated influences of gospel, industrial and underground rap.

Stereogum described the track’s shape as a bouncy, uptempo beat that stays relatively conventional until roughly the final forty-five seconds, when the guitars arrive. That structure is deliberate. A single that spends three quarters of its length being accessible and then breaks is a way of bringing a mainstream listener to a place they would not have chosen, and it is a more interesting move than opening abrasive.

The video was directed by Logan Fields and JPEGMAFIA together, which continues a pattern of him holding the visual credit as well as the audio one.

One Person Made All of It

Self-production is common in rap. Writing, mixing and producing a full album alone is not, and the mixing credit is the one that matters most. Production is the arrangement; the mix is where a record either holds together across twenty-plus tracks or turns into a pile of good ideas.

Doing all three yourself removes the usual corrective. There is no engineer to say a vocal is buried, no outside producer to argue a hook is not landing. What you get instead is coherence, because every decision came from the same head, and the risk is that a bad instinct runs the length of the record without anyone catching it.

Experimental Rap follows 2024’s I Lay Down My Life For You, and the gap is short by the standards of an artist working alone. It arrived in May through AWAL Recordings, as BrooklynVegan reported when the tour and single landed together at the end of April.

Twenty-Five Songs Is a Format Decision

According to the album’s Spotify pre-release page, cited by Stereogum, the record carries twenty-five songs. That number is worth pausing on, because it cuts against how most rap albums have been sequenced for the last five years.

The streaming-era instinct is the opposite: a tight ten to twelve tracks, front-loaded, engineered so the skip rate stays low and the per-track average stays high. Twenty-five songs invites skipping. It also gives a self-producing artist room to put the difficult material somewhere other than the front, which a twelve-track album cannot do without spending a single slot on it.

For a record whose title is a genre label, the length reads as an argument. A twelve-track experimental album is a mood. A twenty-five-track one is a catalogue, and it dares the listener to find the parts that work rather than presenting a curated case.

Naming the Album After the Label People Gave You

Stereogum opened its write-up by asking how you would describe JPEGMAFIA’s music, answering “experimental rap, perhaps”, and noting that this is now the title. The joke lands because the phrase has followed him for years, usually as shorthand from people who could not place him more precisely.

Taking that label and printing it on the sleeve is a small act of reclamation, and it does two useful things at once. It removes the phrase’s power to be used dismissively, because you cannot describe a record as merely experimental rap when that is what it is called. It also sets an expectation the album then has to meet, which is a riskier position than a neutral title would be.

There is a practical dimension too. “Experimental rap” is a search term and a genre tag, not just a description. An album called Experimental Rap sits at the top of every playlist, tag page and search result built around that phrase, which is a considerable amount of free positioning for a record made without a major label’s marketing apparatus behind it.

The blend the press materials describe, spanning rap, punk, rock, industrial and gospel, is the argument for why the label fits rather than an attempt to escape it. Most artists given that tag spend a career trying to shed it in favour of something that sells. Choosing to lead with it, on a self-produced record, is consistent with the rest of the decisions around this release.

Twenty-Three Rooms, and Not One Arena

The North American run opens on 22 September at the Knitting Factory in Spokane and closes on 24 October at the Tabernacle in Atlanta. In between it takes the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, the McDonald Theatre in Eugene, the Roseland in Portland, Showbox SoDo in Seattle, the Warfield in San Francisco, Riverside Municipal Auditorium, the Novo in Los Angeles, the Van Buren in Phoenix, Rockwell at the Complex in Salt Lake City and the Ogden in Denver.

The eastern half runs through the Fillmore in Minneapolis, the Sovereign in St. Louis, the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago, the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Toronto, MTELUS in Montreal, Roadrunner in Boston, Terminal 5 and Brooklyn Paramount on consecutive nights in New York, the Fillmore in Philadelphia, Echostage in Washington and the Fillmore Charlotte.

Read that list and the routing decision is obvious. These are theatres and ballrooms. An artist with this profile could have attempted a smaller number of larger rooms, and chose instead to play more nights in venues where the sound is controllable and the front of the room is close. For a record built on a mix that only one person signed off, that is a consistent choice rather than a modest one.

The two New York dates on 17 and 18 October are the exception that proves it: rather than one bigger venue, two nights in two different rooms on consecutive evenings.

Why the Support Bill Reads Deliberate

redveil and matt proxy open every North American date. Neither is a stadium-facing booking, and both sit in the same lane the headliner has occupied for years, which means the bill is being built for a coherent night rather than a broad one.

Support slots on a run this length are the most valuable currency a headline act controls. Twenty-three rooms of exposure in front of an audience that already accepts abrasive production is worth more to a developing artist than a single festival slot in front of a larger, less committed crowd. Giving both acts the whole run, rather than splitting it into legs, is the version of that favour with the most value in it.

Before the North American dates, the summer took in European festivals: Lowlands in Biddinghuizen on 21 August, Pukkelpop in Hasselt on the 22nd, All Points East with Outbreak in London on the 23rd, and Electric Picnic in Dublin on the 28th. Festival sets are a different discipline from a headline show, and a run of four of them is a useful way to find out which parts of a new record survive being played to people who did not come for you.

What the Autumn Run Has to Prove

Two things. Whether a twenty-five-track album can be turned into a set that holds ninety minutes without losing its shape, and whether a record mixed by one person survives contact with twenty-three different rooms, which is the sternest test any mix gets.

Tickets went on sale on Wednesday 6 May at 10am local, which gave the run more than four months of runway. That is a long lead for theatre-scale dates, and it suggests confidence in the demand rather than a scramble to fill.

What makes this interesting beyond one artist is the model. A rapper who writes, produces and mixes his own record, keeps the video credit, books rooms he can actually fill and hands the whole support run to two acts from his own scene is operating a self-contained business, not just a self-contained studio. Rap has other versions of that argument this year, including the way Rakim answered the age-limit question with The Godbody LP. The methods differ. The independence does not.

The Experimental Rap Tour opens in Spokane on 22 September and finishes in Atlanta on 24 October.
