London Producer’s Instrumental Project Keeps Finding New Listeners Three Years On

Dusty, swung drums underneath, circuitry on top. That is the working formula on PILOT, the instrumental EP CAKbeats put out on 10 June 2023. The London producer builds from boom bap rhythm, then runs experimental electronic material across it. Three years later the EP is still picking up first-time listeners.

The instrumentals in the playlist below include CAKbeats, and his artist profile gathers what this network has written about the London producer. PILOT was placed on this desk by PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news titles. There is no vocal to wait for, so cue it up and let the reading follow.

CAKbeats PILOT EP Puts Boom Bap Drums Under Electronic Texture

Boom bap is a rhythmic contract before it is anything else. Hard kick, cracking snare, swing in the pocket, space left between the hits. Producers who respect that contract can put almost anything on top and the track still walks.

That is the room CAKbeats works in on PILOT. The foundation stays recognisably boom bap. Above it, though, the material is experimental electronic rather than the usual soul chop. So the EP reads as familiar and unfamiliar at once, which is harder than it sounds.

He describes his own lane as the cinematic side of luxury rap. That framing fits. These are beats with scale to them, built to sit under something, yet finished enough to hold a listen alone. For an instrumental project, that dual purpose is the whole job.

Why a 2023 Instrumental Project Keeps Turning Up in New Rotations

Most beat tapes have a short shelf life. They land, they circulate for a few weeks, and the algorithm moves on. PILOT has behaved differently, and the paper trail shows it.

Illustrate Magazine reviewed the EP in full. Brazil’s Music For All covered it as a hip-hop and ambient crossover. Zona Emergente and Senocular Media both wrote it up, while France’s Indie Chronique gave it a feature too. That is coverage in four languages for an independent instrumental release, which rarely happens by accident.

The reason is durability. Because the EP is not chasing a trend sound, it has not dated. A boom bap skeleton was already retro in 2023, so it cannot go out of fashion in the usual way.

Range helps too. CAKbeats works across lofi hip hop beats, chillout and retro soul as well as the harder boom bap end, and PILOT draws on all of it. That gives the EP more than one way in. A listener who arrives for the drums finds the electronic detail. Someone who arrives for the production finds a pocket worth returning to.

Three Producers Who Map the Territory This Instrumental EP Works In

Three names help place it. J Dilla is the starting point for any instrumental hip-hop record, and Donuts proved a beat tape could work as an album rather than a supply catalogue. CAKbeats inherits that assumption directly.

Flying Lotus covers the electronic half. His Brainfeeder records pulled hip-hop drum programming into genuinely experimental production, which is the same crossing PILOT makes from the other direction. Finally, Nujabes is the third reference, because he showed an unhurried, jazz-leaning beat can carry weight without a single vocal. Anyone who keeps those three in rotation will recognise the terrain.

From Beatstars Uploads to a Second Edition of the Series

CAKbeats operates the way many modern producers do. He sells and showcases through his own store rather than waiting for a label, and his catalogue sits on BeatStars, which doubles as his shop front.

RapStar.News curator team: “PILOT earns its place on a rap site because the drums are never decoration. Plenty of producers put an experimental coat over a weak pocket. This EP does the opposite, and that is why it still works for diggers three years after it dropped.”

There is more coming. CAK, the producer behind the name, is at work on a second edition of the PILOT series.

“When I created PILOT, my aim was to push boundaries and explore new sonic territories,” said CAK. “Seeing it continue to connect with listeners and receive recognition years later is incredibly rewarding, and fuels my excitement for the next chapter of the series.”

Where to Stream CAKbeats PILOT EP and Follow the Producer Online

PILOT is on all the usual services. Play it on Spotify, or pick it up on Bandcamp and SoundCloud, where the wider beat catalogue also lives.

For everything between releases, he posts on Instagram and TikTok. A YouTube channel runs alongside them, and he stays active on X as well.
